The layer shows the locations of known fault lines.
The area shown comprises of an 'inner zone' that varies in width from 10 to 50m within which experts expect the fault to rupture at the surface in a large earthquake. The inner zone was given a 20m buffer, the so called 'outer zone' to account for uncertainties in location. The GIS layer comprises of this wider zone (inner plus outer) which was recommended for reference in planning and development. It varies in width from 50 - 90m.
Rules are set out for construction alteration, and addition to residential buildings around the Wellington and Ohariu fault. |
